A drunk driver, Jonathan Donner, 24, ran a red light and crashed into a minibus that immediately started on fire killing two people and injuring three more, police reported. Donner is being charged with two counts of DUI resulting in death, as well as three counts of DUI resulting in substantial bodily harm. The incident occurred on the corner of South Main Street and Charleston Boulevard after Donner sped his BMW through a red light. Witness, Juan Leon, told Las Vegas Sun reporters: “The explosion was so big. A few cars stopped to try to help them, but there was absolutely no way they could help. We couldn’t do anything but sit and watch, really. It was really sad.” Las Vegas Metro Sgt. Richard Strader told KSNV: “We’re going to make sure [Donner] doesn’t go home. This past Monday, a Las Vegas woman and her young granddaughter were tragically killed in a hit-and-run incident while they waited at a bus stop. The woman has been identified as Maria Garcia, age 58. Her granddaughter, Alyssa, was just six years old. Both died from injuries at University Medical Center. Police believe the man responsible for the fatal crash is 20 year old Leonardo Ruesga. Ruesga was detained and booked in Clark County Detention Center where he faces charges included two counts of DUIs as well as a charge for leaving the scene of a car crash. Police also reported that an 18 month old little girl was injured in the car crash. The car crash itself occurred near Maryland Parkway and Sahara around 2:30 p.m. when a 2005 Volvo driven by Ruesga drove onto the sidewalk. At first, according to witnesses, the Volvo hit a stroller carrying the 18 month old girl. Then Maria and Alyssa were hit. Las Vegas DUI Checkpoints

This past Thanksgiving Holiday, seven drivers were arrested in Las Vegas for Driving Under the Influence. This was just the beginning of a Holiday-season crusade to cut back on drunk driving accidents in the Las Vegas Valley. Metro has long been devoted to curbing alcohol-related crashes, and since these crashes tend to spike around holidays such as Christmas, New Years, Halloween, and Thanksgiving, Metro will be setting up checkpoints accordingly, in order to prevent as many fatalities as possible. Checkpoints are typically set up from 7 p.m. to 3 a.m. This past Thanksgiving, nearly 2,000 vehicles passed through one such checkpoint at D.I. near Valley View. A total of 28 drivers were stopped, and seven were arrested. 18 Traffic Citations were issued. The exact locations of upcoming DUI Checkpoints in Las Vegas is not announced to the public, but under all circumstances, it is in drivers’ best interest to drive sober, fully awake, and within the posted speed limits. According to AAA, designated driver services in Clark County can be found at www.bemydd.com and www.designateddriversinc.com. Prices vary.
